Why do we do the Abolition Walk?
Abolitionists were individuals who actively fought against the institution of slavery, advocating for its immediate and complete abolition.
Many abolitionists lived and worked in this region during the 19th century. Due to its geographical location along the Erie Canal, Canastota played a role in the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans to escape to freedom in the northern states and Canada.
The Erie Canal itself was not only an important transportation route for goods but also a significant pathway for freedom seekers. It provided an avenue for abolitionists and sympathetic individuals to assist enslaved people in their journey to
freedom.
