Melvin Stith, a retired Syracuse University Dean and Veteran of the US Army, and Patricia Stith, a prominent educator and advocate for equality, have dedicated their lives to advancing education and justice for all. Their commitment to human rights and their unwavering support for community have made them exemplary leaders in the ongoing struggle for social change.

Their insight, passion, and dedication to the principles of abolition and justice will undoubtedly inspire and engage all participants in this important event.

Calling all STUDENTS!

We are looking to increase our students at the 2023 Abolition Walk! We have opportunities for community service hours at the walk, we also would love to work with teachers who will provide extra credit for attending the walk and learning about the pivotal role this area had in Abolition. If you know any students or staff who would like to be more involved or walk FOR FREE, send us an email at AbolitionRoad@gmail.com. We will get them or their classes registered at no cost.

Choirs on the Canal

Experience the enchanting melodies of the Magical Musical Squad from Grace Episcopal Church, as they grace the shores of the historic Erie Canal to kick off the Abolition Walk. Join us for an unforgettable musical journey, and we are thrilled to have them as our special guests.

Facts about Canastota/Peterboro and Abolition

1. Underground Railroad Routes: Canastota, strategically located between Syracuse and Utica, was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad.  The Gerrit Smith Estate served as a refuge for escaped slaves seeking freedom on their way to Canada. Smith was known to provide assistance to those escaping slavery.
2. Abolitionist Conventions: The town hosted several abolitionist conventions during the mid-19th century, where activists and leaders gathered to discuss and strategize ways to end slavery and promote equality.
3. Anti-Slavery Publications: Canastota residents published anti-slavery newspapers and pamphlets that spread awareness about the horrors of slavery and advocated for its abolition

Abolitionist Convention:

Peterboro became a hub for abolitionist activities and conventions. Notably, the "National Liberty Party Convention" was held in the hamlet in 1848, advocating for political action. The gatherings brought together abolitionist leaders, activists, and supporters to discuss strategies for ending slavery and advancing civil rights.
